there are many issues I have with the average driver out there that must be heard! These items are in the rule book and I'd like you to look them up and refresh you mind on what your actually supposed to be doing when you drive.
- When making any turn at any intersection you must turn into the immediate lane. This means, when your turning left and there are 2 lanes you MUST turn into the left most lane! This allows those turning right from the other direction to also turn without you cutting them off. Same goes for the right turners! When turning the corner of any street you MUST turn into the right most lane. This flow of traffic works if you let it. Once your in that lane you can work your way to the other side for that far turn one always want to make.
- Passing. This is one rule that is greatly misused. On any road no matter how many lanes there are you MUST always pass to the left. Passing on the right is illegal! This means, when you are driving in the left most lane and you're driving too slow for the person behind you, the safest thing you could possibly do is GET OUT OF THE WAY. Its not your concern if he's driving too fast or not, that's their mistake, just get out of the way so to not put yourself in harms way.
- This brings me to the next point LANES. Lanes are added to roads for the specific purpose of letting others speed up past you. And the idea of the "fast lane" is in the rule book. If you do not plan on exceeding the speed limit DON'T drive in the left lanes. Now there has been a signal designed to wake up those who do not pay attention to the traffic behind, that is to FLASH YOUR LIGHTS. Its important to note that this IS in the rule book and is an official signal written by the state. So getting missed off because someone flashes there lights behind you is totally unwarranted! I admit sometimes this can be annoying, so what I do is turn my lights off and on again instead of using my bright. It serves the same purpose and is less harsh on the driver in front of you.
- Turn Lanes! Yes there is a such thing as turn lanes. These are lanes specially designed so that you can get out of the way and turn allowing those behind you to not slow down for ya. This means, maintain your speed then once in the turn lane, slow down for your turn. If you find this difficult to do, your not getting into the turn lane soon enough.
- Merging traffic. Whenever your entering the freeway, always remember you DO NOT have the right of way. The person on the ramp trying to merge MUST slow down to merge. Now this goes both ways also, if your on the freeway and someone is merging DO NOT slow down, if anything speed up, you have the right of way and therefore should not change speed, let them figure it out.
- Lastly, if you find that you can not drive as fast as the speed limit because your too scared and don't feel the road conditions are safe, DON'T DRIVE. If you can't be confident and defensive when you drive don't endanger the rest of us and STAY OFF THE ROAD. This goes both ways. If your TOO CONFIDENT, you may become RECKLESS!
- Cautious, Courteous and Defensive are the key words to remember. Give your fellow drivers ROOM and abide by the rules. If others are not going by the rules get out of there way and stay away from them, and you'll be safe. You can't make somebody slow down or force them to follow the rules by flashing your lights and screaming at them.
